1
Get a computer (Windows, macOS or Linux) and a Micro-USB cable ready.
-
2
Download the official MicroPython UF2 firmware from micropython.org. Both currently shipping Picopad models (Wifi and Pro) carry the Raspberry Pi Pico W module, so the right build for either is RPI_PICO_W.
-
3
Make sure Picopad is powered off.
-
4
Press and hold the BOOTSEL button on the Pico module (visible from the back of the Picopad), and while holding it plug Picopad into your computer over USB.
-
5
Picopad will appear as an external drive named
RPI-RP2. In this mode it accepts firmware uploads. -
6
Drag the downloaded UF2 file onto the
RPI-RP2drive window. -
7
After the copy completes, Picopad reboots and loads the new firmware. The
RPI-RP2drive disappears and Picopad shows up as a serial device instead – that means MicroPython is running. -

Done. Continue with Basics in MicroPython for your first program.
